Unify coding style

This is rather an issue that needs to be fixed than a general proposal. I think it would be a good idea to introduce an uniform coding style to the project before everyone starts working on it. If you have looked into the project you may have noticed that the current coding style is often inconsistent and thus makes it hard to understand the code.

If you agree, I will be willing to refactor the code with a new coding style in time.
